To control access to your wireless network, your computer must take the role of the gateway between the Internet and the wireless hotspot. This is achieved using Microsoft Microsoft Windows Internet Connection Sharing (ICS).
In order to configure Internet Connection Sharing your Network Connections control panel must have at least two connections:
· Internet Connection – connects your computer to the Internet, and is the Shared connection
· Private Connection – connects your computer to the wireless network, and allows the hotspot users to use the Shared Internet Connection

Figure 1 - Two connections example
The Internet connectivity of your hotspot can be provided in different ways. Examples of Internet connections are
· Local area network connections that are connected to broadband modem
· PPPoE or VPN connections
· Wireless connections
The wireless connectivity of your hotspot can be provided in one of two ways:
· Wireless (802.11) networking card attached to your computer
· Wireless router or access point(s) connected to your network
Note: Wireless card is usually the quickest way to
get started, but it is limited in range and speed.
Access points or wireless
routers have better range, higher speed, can utilize external antennas, and can
support more concurrent users.
